Page to Screen - Flowers for Algernon

You have read the short story, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, and have watched the movie version entitled, Charly. You took notes on the differences between the two works and the effects the changes had on how you viewed the characters, the storyline, or the overall meaning of the story.

Now:

1. Choose three differences from your notes and explain how they are different from the original story.
2. Give your opinion about the effects each of these specific differences had
on your view and why.
3. Give reasons why you think the director of the movie made the changes. What was the director trying to convey that the writer, Daniel Keyes, was not and why?

Wednesday:

1. Respond to two other peer posts.
2. Use peer’s name in your response.
3. Choose a quote/point from his/her post to agree or disagree
with or question.
4. Explain how the quote/point helps further your opinion or contradict it.
5. Expand on the quote/point you chose with further ideas or questions for your peer.

  1. One of the differences between the book and the movie was how the story was told thru the point of view. In the book Charlie tells his thoughts in the first person. In the case we don't get to find out others characters thoughts and opinions. By the reader being able to hear what other characters thoughts are you let us understand what is going on in the characters mind and the reader gets to see more emotion from when the movie tells the story line in third person instead of first person.
The second difference I notice is that they took away the scene

    1. The second difference I noticed is that they took away the scene where Charlie gets fired and how they display it in the book. By the director taking away this scene it takes away some of the emotions that the reader had while reading the book. This is because when you lose why and how Charlie get fried it takes away the process of learning how intelligence is a bliss and how is friend is determined.
The third difference is that the director adds in the scene where Charlie goes to Mrs. Kinnian apartment and tells and shows his love for her. He brings her a gift and gets dressed up, but after a while into the conversation he takes things a step too far and pushes his boundaries. With them adding this scene it shows you a a lot more then just having Charlie write that he is in love with her as the author did.

    2. I agreee with you Oliva about Charlie getting aggressive with Ms. Kinnin. Because in the moive after he gives her a gift he tries to kiss her but she turns away. Then he leans in again to try to kiss her and he gets so agressive hes forcing it on her. So Ms. Kinnin I think yelled at him in rage. But in the book Charlie goes on a date with her where they dont even kiss even though he really likes her and has feelings for her

  2. Theres a lot of differences between the movie and the book but some more noticable than others. One difference is that in the book the story took place in New York but in the movie it took place in Boston. Another difference is Charlies locker was never filled with raw dough in his locker. The final difference is Charlie never tried to kiss Ms. Kinnian in the book, he did ask her to dinner but he never made the aggresive move that he made in the movie.

  3. The first difference i saw was that Mrs.Kinnian has a fiance. In the text she was single and wasnt interested in Charlie. Even in the text she wasnt interested but Charlie went after her anyway. Another difference was that charlie worked at a bakery in the movie but in the book he worked at a box factory. The director probably chnaged that because working at a bakery is a more common job. Another difference is that Mrs. Kinnian asked to go and see Charlies room. I think the dircetor did this so that it made the movie more interesting.

    1. Another difference i noticed was when everything in the movie moved a lot faster and in the book it kind of dragged on. I think the director did this to keep the viewers attention.

    2. I agree with you melody, because everything moves faster in the movie than the book. Like you said "the book kind of dragged on" I agree with how you said that the director did it to keep the viewers attention.

    3. I agree with you with you mel because in the book she didn't want him and in the movie she didn't want him. But I disagree with you on the part were Ms. Kinnian asked Charlie to go in his room because I think didn't do that to keep the viewers attention. I think the author put that scene to see how Charlie is leaving and to show why he needed the operation.

  4. The first difference I noticed was that Charlie was a lot more open about his love for Ms. Kinnian when he realizes he loves her. In the book, he kept it more to himself and in the movie he is very straight forward about it. In the book, he didn't kiss Mrs. Kinnian, but in the movie, he went to her house to give her a gift and did kiss her. I think the director did this to make things more interesting and to add a more dramatic scene.
The second difference I noticed was Charlie hadn't known when Algernon died and Dr. Stauss and Dr. Nemur had hidden it from him. In the book, he was there when Algernon had died. He was angry in the movie about how they had kept it from him and how they didn't tell him that the operation would be temporary when they found out. I think the director added this for more dramatic effect and to make the viewer feel how he actually felt a bit more because they know now that Charlie would have a regression like Algernon did and that he might possibly die.
The third difference I noticed was Charlie worked at a baker instead of a factory. Instead of Joe and Frank saying things like, "Wow, he really pulled a Charlie Gordon." they destroy the gift he got for his landlady and asked him to do things for them such as work the machines. I think the director add this to show how Charlie's friends were really mean to him and how people with intellectual disabilities get treated.

  5. i think that the book was better than the movie, because it showed more of Charlies mental illness and of how the Richerds test help get to a more intelligent level. Also it showed how when he talked to other people he had to bring down all the lager words that he now knows. When Charlie was losing his mind was going or in another way he was returning to his former way. And the ending of the movie just showed him playing not taking a couple days like in the book. Those are my feelings about the book over the movie.

    1. i think the director did that to the book so it can have a bigger conflict between Chalie in the book and the Charlie in the movie.

  6. One thing that was different from the text that was in the movie is that Charlie's co-workers filled his locker with raw dough from the factory. I think they showed this to show that his co-workers where mean and treated him disgustingly. The directors did this to set a mood and tone at the beginning of the movie. It would've been better to show it in the book to add the tone and mood. Another difference is that in the book yelled shut up and stood their when the boy dropped the glasses. Though in the movie he said nothing and helped the boy. This showed that he felt bad and realized that he used to be that boy. So in the movie it gave me more of a prespective. Lastly in the book Joe and Frank send him to get newspapers and ditched him. Though in the movie they told him to go to the corner of the street because it was about to snow. They showed this to show that he wasn't that smart. Those are my main three differences from the text and the book.

    Replies
    1. I agree with you Hunter, When you said that he wasn't that smart. When Joe and Frank were partying with him in the bar, they told him to leave its about to snow. The movie was in the spring and it didn't snow and Charlie didn't realize that he was being ditched. That shows that Charlie wasn't smart yet.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you hunter because the scene where they filled Charlie's locker with raw dough did do a better job than the book at displaying how mistreated Charlie was. Also when Charlie didn't yell "Shut up," when the boy was laughed at in the restaurant wit showed he was more mature in the movie. Finally in the scene where he was sent to wait for the snow, what the director was trying to display in this scene was that he still wasn't intelligent enough to understand when he was being taken advantage of. this is why i agree with your post.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you Hunter like when the dough in the locker it was not in the book. In the book charlie yelled at the people when he made fun of the kid for dropping the dishes but in the book they had that the movie didn't have that.

  7. The first difference i noticed was that Charlie worked at a bakery not a factory, this made a big difference because everything that happened in the factory is different in the bakery such as Charlie cleans the floor not the bathroom. Another thing is that the whole bakery is picking on him not just Joe and Frank.
The second thing that i noticed is that Miss Kinnian has a fiance and that is hard to deal with for Charlie because he realizes that he loves her and wants to be with her. Charlie is willing to do anything to be with her. He even went to her house when he realized that he loved her.
The third difference that i noticed that when Joe and Frank went to the bar with charlie there was another guy that we didn't know, they told Charlie to talk to the jukebox so that they could have music on and that never happened in the short story.

    1. Another thing is that when the operation was wearing off things went a lot faster in the movie. "All i want to be is smart" is a phrase Charlie was saying his whole life but when he got it he wouldn't change it for the world. But when he lost it, it came fast, we didn't have a warning. It just kind of happened and it was done with.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Audra on how the director changes his work place. Where you state "the whole bakery is picking on him not just Joe and Frank." I found that made a difference when it can to the question how is friendship is determined. By having a whole work place pick on him, other than two people it allows the reader/watcher to see more where how Charlie doesn't understand that he is getting made fun of. That is why I agree with you on the change of his work place.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you audra on were Charlie worked because in the box factory he made changes to how the machines were setup but in the bakery he couldn't because those machines are just used to make bread the way it is ordered.I aslo agree with you on Charlie loving Ms. KInnian because in the book he didn't go to her house and it didn't say that he stalked her but in the movie he stalks her and finds out were she lives.

  8. Another thing about the story it didnt show or tell us about charlies home but in the movie it did mrs kinnian asked him if she can come in and see it this doesnt relate to anything in the story and another thing about his home is that we saw his neighbor we didnt get her name but she had a dog and lived below charlie and actually looked after him i find this interesting because why would the author and director hide this well not hide but keep this character unknown from the readers but know in the movie why is that

  10. In my opinion I think that the movie was better than the book, I think that since the movie had way more insights like in the beginning of the movie it showed where Charlie worked and what his house looked like, but in the book it didn't show any of this, all it did was say traits or at least give a hint on what they were like. Not only that but in the movie it also showed everyone point of view unlike in the book were only showed Charlie's point of view. In the movie it also showed Charlie kissing Miss kinnian, while in the book Charlie saying the feelings he had for her. The last difference would be how in the movie Charlie didn't leave while in the book Charlie actually left town to a place that no one knew he was super smart (new york?)

  11. The first difference i noticed was there were three guys picking on charlie not just joe and frank. The mystery man was fat and didnt make jokes about charlie he just laughed at everything joe and frank said.

The second difference i noticed was that in the movie joe and frank put sticky dough in charlies locker and charlie thought it was funny so he started playing in it and putting it all over his hair.that was not in the book it started off with charlie writing in his notebook about being smarter.

The third difference i noticed was that charlie and Ms.Kinnian had a intimate relationship in the woods (that was pretty disturbing).Charle also started dating Ms.Kinnian in the movie. In the book charlie and Ms.Kinnian do not date and the don't even get close getting intimate.charlie likes her and she likes him but they never end up dating because charlie doesnt feel right talking to her because he is smarter than her and then he starts becoming stupid again and he doesnt want to date her anymore

  12. The first difference I noticed between the written book and film of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is that seeing them, the characters out, was different. For any movie really. Obviously in the book, we couldn't really see the characters, we had to imagine, but the film we could see how the director would convey the characters. I thought Charlie would be a guy who doesn't look all there, but Charlie looked like a pretty average guy. The actors you cast can make a big difference between the text and out on screen. So it was just dfferent.

The second difference I noticed is that Charlie and Mrs. Kinnian get much more closer than in the book. That really made a difference. The director probably did this to show what they could've been like in the book.Since he doesn't really explain so. It changed my views on Charlie. Because I know in the book that Charlie confessed his love to her, but in the movie he did that and followed her to give her a mirror. And then things, got a little heated. We didn't think Charlie would do something like that though. So it was really suprising.

The third difference was at the end of the movie. When they had a presentation to display Charlie and Algernon's progress with the operation. With they also showcasing a video of Charlie answering simple question, and proving what they are capable of doing. The questions and topics were being thrown at him, and,he answered each one thoroughly. While in the book, they just focused on other things. Like losing his memory. And his relationship with Mrs. Kinnian. It showed Charlie's true side, how he reacts to certain things, like all the doctors seeing his stupidity before the operation, he just stared into the floor. In the book he just stayed the same. The director probably did a scene like this because they might've wanted to show how Charlie can be.

    1. Kasey, I agree with you when your say, "it shows Charlie's true side" when he is reacting to different things.

  13. The first difference I noticed between the movie and the book Flowers For Algernon is that the co-workers treated Charlie different than the book. Although they made fun of him, what they did to him was partially different. They filled his locker with dough. I think they would show this in the movie instead of the book is because the director wanted you to get a visual idea of what you expect that the co-workers would do to him.
My next difference is that Charlie and Ms. Kinnian fall in love rather than she rejects Charlie in the book. The movie shows various scenes of them together. Rather than leaving New York to try again. I think they wanted the movie to have a weird ending of him in the park rather than leaving for good. I think this because they wanted to have Charlie a more

    1. However in the book, Charlie leaves Ms. Kinnean because he is too smart for her.
I think they did that because they wanted to make things more interesting and to show Charlie's love for Ms.Kinnian by showing a scene of Charlie giving her a mirror as a present.
My last difference is that in the book, Joe and Frank sent him to get newspapers and just ditched him.Although in the movie, they told him to just go to the corner of the street it's about to snow. They showed this because he wasn't that smart enough.

    2. I disagree with when you said that he left because he was to smart for her he left to start over as a different Charlie. I agree on what you said on when the co-workers treated differently. You used good punctuation and had good explanations.

  14. The first difference I noticed in the movie that wasn't in the book of "Flowers for Algernon" is Ms apple. Ms apple is an aged lady who owns a house that Charlie lives in. They live together which means that charlie lives upstairs and ms apple lives downstairs. The director put this scene in to make it clear that Charlie isn't living all on his own.

    1. The second difference I noticed is that Charlie said he loved ms Kinnian in the book but in the movie, Charlie showed up at her apartment to give her a gift but aparently charlie decided to show his love for her more by kissing her. The director put this scene in to show us that he really loves her.

The third differece I noticed was that Charlie worked different jobs.In the movie, Charlie worked in a bakery but he worked in a factory in the book. The director changed it because if u work a bakery it doesnt require a lot of knowledge do do the job especially if Charlie is just cleaning.

      Delete
    2. Leah, I disagree with your first difference because in the book the author told us that Charlie was living with Ms Flynn, and in the movie he was living with Ms Apple, so he wasn't living alone. I agree with your second difference because In the book Charlie didn't express his feelings the same way he did in the movie. I agree to disagree on your last difference because in any job you would require knowledge but I agree that the director decided to change it in the movie so that it proves a lot more about what Charlie eligible of doing.

  15. The first difference i noticed from the book the movie of Flowers of Algernon by Daniel Keys, the movie is so much different than the book, because in the book Charlie when he got the operation in the book charlie and the other charters they did not do a presentation about the operation. In the book when algernon die he knew right away that the same thing would happen to him.

The second difference i noticed is that in the book charlie only liked in the middle of the story when charlie realized that they were the same age and that he loved her.Miss kinnian and Charlie never dated in the book. In the movie charlie liked miss kinnan the whole time and charlie told her that he loved her and started dating in the woods.

The third difference i noticed is that in the book charlie coworkers sign a petition to fire him, but in the movie his coworkers sign a petition to fire his friends.

    1. Katherine, I agree with your first difference because I also thought the book was much different from the movie and I also noticed that when charlie got the operation in the book it was different from the movie. I also agree with your second difference becasue Ms kinnian and charlie never dated in the book. I disagree with your third difference because in the book charlies coworkers do sign a petition to get him fired and in the movie they do the same thing.

      Delete
    2. I agree, with your first difference but for your third difference I disagree because both in the movie and book the co-workers sign a petition to get Charlie fired. Also the your sencond difference Charlie didn't like Mrs.Kinnian the whole time, it was later around the movie were he realized that he had feelings for Mrs.Kinnian.

  16. The first difference between is that in the book it does not sow his house but in the movie it does. The director did this because he didn't want to copy the book.

The second difference is that in the book they weren't dating but in the movie they were dating and kissing. The director did that because he wanted them to date not just be very close friends.

the last difference is that in the book he did not stand up in front of a bunch of people to answer questions that they asked about but in the book he didn't answer questions by other people the director did that because wanted charlie to express hes feeling before he was not smart anymore.

  17. The first difference is that the movie was more complicated to understand the scenes unlike the book it was straight forward and explained the characters well, in the movie there were added scenes that weren't in the book to give more interesting perspective.

The second difference is that in the book Miss. Kinnian was not dating Charlie and in the movie they did have a relationship. The movie had different personalities to each character, to give them more life.

The third difference is that in the book gave Charlie gave more interaction in the movie it went quick it didn't give so much reaction Charlie was explained more active in the book he did more reasonable things than in the book.

  18. The first difference is that the movie was more interesting than the book. Because it had more mind image that makes you understand more that they were trying to say.

The second difference is the movie the changed and add some thins then the book. like three scenes in the book in the movie.

    the theerd diffrence

  19. The first difference I noticed between the book flowers for Alegrenon by Daniel Keyes and the movie Charlie is the factory where Charlie worked in the book was actually a bakery in the movie. Since Charlie has mental disabilites he cant have any job he wants so he workes at a bakery/factory because you don't need a high level of intelligence for those jobs. l think the director of the movie did this because of other events that where in the movie, like when charlie saves the company alot of money for coming up with a way to reduce some of the factories resources in the book.

The second difference I noticed from the book and the movie was that Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss decide to tell a auidence about the operation that they did to Charlie. In the book the doctors keep it to them selfs acept for some special professionals that they brought in to help charlie. I think the director did this to remind Charlie of his old self, when Dr. Strauss shows the auidence a clip of Charlie befor the operation being asked some very simple questions.

The third difference from the book and the movie that I noticed was near the end of the movie Charlie starts to see his old self every where he goes. Unlike in the book Charlie starts to feel very sick and skips work to stay in bed. The directors might have down this to show Charlie is affraid of turning into his old self after being so smart.

  20. The first difference I noticed between the book and the movie Flowers for Algernon by Daniel keys is charlie seems to be more smarter than he was in the movie. He understands what others are saying a little more better than in the book.

The second difference I noticed was that in the movie when charlie got the operation he was having illusions about Ms Kinnian and of him riding a motorcycle. He also dated Ms Kinnian. In the book charlie only liked Ms Kinnian. I think the director changed that so that the movie would seem more interesting,

The third difference is that in the book charlie didn't want to talk to anyone when he was losing his intelligence. In the movie he still talked to people and wasn't always alone reading and writing in his journal like in the book.

Also he whats to be smart.

Then the movie says charlie dose not leaf new york

  22. The first difference is the Charlie and Miss Kinnian kiss scene/Charlie and Miss Kinnian's date(?). In the movie when Charlie kissed Miss Kinnian, even though she's engaged, I found it a little shocking because he probably already knew that she was engaged, so why would he make a move like that? Also, it shows in the movie that Charlie and Miss Kinnian go on a couple of dates. In the book, it only says that Charlie has feelings for Miss Kinnian and just keeps it to himself. I think the director did this to make the movie seem interesting with the relationships between the characters.

The second difference the motorcycle gang scene. In the book, there was nothing even close to motorcycles and gangs! However, I think the director added this for a little amusement and to show what was going on with Charlie at that moment.

The third difference is the Algernon-Gordon Effect scene (Nemur and Strauss telling doctors/scientist/etc. about their intelligence operation). In the book, the doctors wanted to keep it a secret for a while and then share it. In the movie, however, they quickly shared the news despite the fact that one of their test subjects (Algernon) died- I think the director did this to make the movie seem interesting and to move along in time (the months) of the story.

  23. The first difference I noticed between the written short story and the movie of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes is the tests that Charlie did. In the book version, when we are told about Charlie doing the maze, we are told that Charlie tries to be faster than Algernon, we cant really picture what Charlie is doing for the test. When we read this scene, our minds are vacuous. It's hard to picture Charlie doing the maze test with Algernon. In the movie we can see that Charlie is using a paper copy of Algernon;s maze and he tries to follow the route faster.

The second difference that i saw was

    1. that when Charlie was in at the bar, he saw the boy carrying the tray with glass cups. In the book when the boy dropped the tray, everyone even Charlie laughed at the boy, then Charlie realizes that he and the boy are alike and stands up for the boy. In the movie when Charlie sees the boy, he sees that the boy is just Charlie before he had the surgery. When the boy drops the tray Charlie goes over and help while the others laugh at the boy. Charlie knew how the boy felt and wanted to make a change.

The third and final difference that I noticed Is that in the movie, Charlie was more open with his feelings towards mrs.kinnian. When Charlie went to Mrs.Kinnian's home Charlie told her how he felt and kissed her. In the book, Charlie kept his feelings concealed from Mrs.Kinnian.

the second difference is charlie went to a science show and they asked him questions and then he aswwered the questions and thenhe asked the doctor and the proffser a question and it was charlie gorden and know body knew what it was and he said the answer was dumb stupid and my old self etc. i think what the athour wanted show that charlie was getting smarter and noticing things.
the third difference is how in the movie it should charlie and his friends working at the factory {after the opperation on charlie} the friends ask charlie to work the machine and the friends though he would get it wrong but then he got it right and they were surpise and then you did not see the friends in the rest of the movie agian but in but in the book yes {friend was at the bar in the movie}. i think the athour was trying to show that the friends were surpised when he {charlie} got it right.

The second difference is Charlie wrote on a chalk board to keep track of important dates in the movie. In the book Charlie wrote in a journal and that's how we knew what his handwriting was like. The director probably did this so we can see the handwriting since we cannot just read a journal during the movie.

The final difference is Charlie's speech isn't proper. The actor probably did this to show Charlie has a disability. That is also probably why the director chose this actor over any other.

    2. Haley, I agree with your first difference because it is very true. In the book miss kinnian didn't give charlie his tests, but in the movie she did. I also agree on your thoughts on why the director did that, to show how Charlie and miss kinnian's relationship progressed.

    3. Haley, I agree with your first difference because in the story, Miss Kinnian didn't give Charlie the test whereas in the movie, she did. 1. One event that changes is when Charlie's co-workers tell him to use the dough machine. In the book, Charlie rearranged the machine order, but in the movie all he does is operate the dough machine. This makes the scene have less of an impact.

The second difference that i saw was the inkblot test. It was replaced by a simple picture instead of the rorschach test. I think that that takes away from the story, because it makes Charlie seem as though he doesn't grow as much intelectually in the movie as he does in the book.

The third difference that stood out to me was that in the movie, Charlie and Ms.Kinnian go on a trip to Fanuel Hall. I think that the director did this to build upon their friendship. Also this shows that the movie takes place in Boston, whereas the book takes place in New York.

    2. I agree with you on your third point. The trip to Fanuel hall is a detail that is different from the story.

  28. The first difference is that charlie works at a dough factory which changes some of the events. A event that is changed is his coworkers put raw dough in his locker. The last event that was altered because of this once charlie gets smart they try to mess with him and have him break the machine but he does it correctly and they get fearful of him.

The third difference is that Miss Kinnian and Charly get married. This did not happen inside the book and this shows Miss kinnian and charlys relationship grow from beginning and end.

  31. The first difference I noticed that was in the movie and not in the written story was that miss kinnian was giving charlie the test and in the written story doctor strauss was.I think it makes sense that miss kinnian tests him because she is his teachers and they have a relationship .so she knows what he could do and not do.

The third difference i noticed is when the co workers put yeast in charlie bread so it could come out of the oven. I think they did that in the movies to how the co worker where not his friends

  32. The first difference i noticed was that in the movie it shows Charlie's house and he lives with this other lady I believe the director did this to show how Charlie lived in Boston.

The second difference I noticed was that in the movie Charlie's friends show him how to use a new machine but in the story they didn't do that in the book I believe the director did this because they wanted to develop the roles of Charlie's friends.

  33. The first difference that i noticed between the book flowers for Algernon and the movie was that in the movie you could not only see his progress you could hear his progress. Because before the surgery he was slurring his words and he talked slow. But then after the surgery he started talking faster and pronouncing words better.

  34. The first difference of the book Flowers For Algernon is before he got the operation his friends were tricking him to talking to the music box.I think the director was showing how Charlie could get tricked easily.

The second difference is when he got algernon the mouse in his room he got mad because he knew he couldn't beat him.The old lady (or the home owner) had a talk with him and encouraged him to race algernon.I think director was showing he can get encouraged.

  35. The first difference I noticed was that the story was told in third person form instead of Charlie's journal. I believe that the directors wanted the other characters to be able to express their thoughts. I find it better because I didn't really understand what the characters do sometimes because it dosen't give enough hints at what they do.

The second difference is when Charlie goes to a meeting to show off the "new him". The director wanted to show the audience that everybody knew of Charlie's surgery. This is a good thing since as far as we now only the doctors and Ms.Kinnian knew about it.

The third difference is that Charlie hallucinates about being dumb again. I think the directors put that in because they wanted to show Charlie's fear of being dumb. But however it gave him enough time to learn the feeling of being smart and socialize.

    1. I agree with what you said about the director in the first difference. I feel that when the director had the story in third person, he wanted us to be able to understand and see what the other characters are doing within the story plot.

    2. I agree with your first point. The book had less detail then the movie because of it's first person point of view.

I didn't really understand the second point, but i guess it is true.

I agree with your third point as well because i also wrote about his dream about being chased by his dumb self.

  36. one diffrence is that charlie told ms kinnean he had feelings for her and then he tried to kiss her but she was resisting and he forced her to kiss him. the director invented this because in the book he probaly didnt want to write what happend or because it would be hard to explain that scene all in words so he put the scene in the movie and not the book. this makes me feel sad because in the movie he told her to leave and in the book all they had was a student teacher relationship.

the second diffrence is that in the book the guys were bullying charlie and makeing fun of him so they put a huge pile of dough in his locker and he was playing with it because they thought it was funny and he was trying to fit in.

  38. the first difference I noticed was before Charlie had his operation his co workers were making fun of him by saying his head was vacuous which meant they said he didn't have a brain which was also shown in this quote "what did they do charlie, put some brains in" not only were that being bad friends but they said his brain was empty!!!In the story they didnt say that but they did treat charlie like the book

  39. The first difference i observed was that charlie didn't write any progress reports throughout the entire experiment. In the short story, all the events were told through the progress reports Charlie has written. This allowed readers to experience his feelings, thoughts and events that happened throughout the experiment. However in the movie Charlie doesn't write anything about the operation. This completely changes the conveyance of the story in the movie.
the second difference i noticed was that in the story it states that Charlie works in a factory but in the movie he works in a bakery. I think the director put this in the movie because a bakery is a more common job to work for.
the third difference i noticed was, after the big conference charlie left the auditorium and started to see his old self every where he went. where as in the book this never occurred.

  40. The first difference between the story and the movie "Flowers For Algernon" by Daniel Keys was that Charlie wasn't living with Ms Apple, while in the book Charlie was living alone. I think that the director added Ms Apple to show us that Charlie isn't smart enough to know how to handle certain things in a house alone.

The second difference I noticed was that In the book Charlie told us how he felt about Miss Kinnian but he never really did anything about it, while in the movie Charlie kissed Miss Kinnian and took her on a date. I think the director added that scene in to show us the relationship between Charlie and Miss Kinnian.

The third difference was that in the movie they showed a motorcycle scene. While in the book, motorcycles weren't mentioned at all. I think that the director added that in just to show a better picture about what's going on.

    1. Kristy, I agree with you on your second comment. Because It's true, in the book Charlie didn't really express his feelings at all, while in the movie, he showed his feelings a lot more than in the book. I also agree with your thought about the director part. Since in the book they don't show anything, or tell anything. So the director probably thought it would be good to show there relationship since the book didn't describe or show that side of Charlie.

    2. Kristy, I politely disagree with your first difference because in the book Charlie lived with Ms.Flynn and in the movie lived with Ms.Apple. So Charlie never lived alone. I agree with your second reason because in the book you couldn't tell if Charlie was really expressing this feeling all the way but in the movie you couldn't see that he did. I also agree with your third difference because its true that there was nothing about motorcycles in the book but there was in movie.

  41. The first difference between the book Flowers For Algernon and the movie that i noticed is the setting. In the book version of Flowers For Algernon the setting is in New York City, but in the movie version the setting is in Boston I think the producers changed this because Boston is a very historical city and Charlie could learn more things there.

Another difference i noticed between the movie and the book is that in the book Charlie get's really mad after the operation, because he thinks it didn't make him any smarter and in the movie it shows charlie getting so mad that he runs away and takes out all his frustration by playing bumper cars which i found to be a really entertaining scene.

The third difference i noticed was when there was a scene where Charlie was in a maze and he was being chased by himself before the operation. I think that this was added in because it showed that there was no escape from Charlie going back to his old self.

    1. I agree with you Tommy because in Boston they a lot of schools and university's there while New York has some parts where there isn't a lot of education there. I do agree that Charlie gets mad but I don't really understand why he went to the bumper cars. My guess was it was to calm him down.

I agree that he was being chased but it happened after the operation, (unless that's what you meant to type) but other than that I thought the same thing when I saw that scene.

    2. I agree with you Tommy because Boston has a lot of history and Charlie might learn more from Boston being the setting.
I agree with Tommy because in the movie it shows how Charlie reliefs his stress.
I agree with Tommy because it shows that once he loses his smarts there's no going back to it.

    3. I agree with your third point this is like a view into his brain and his feelings. This detail was a good addition to the story in my opinion.

    4. Tommy i agree with u because in Boston there is way more memorials and museums in Boston than in New York. There is also way more education like Cody said.

  42. The second difference I noticed was that in the movie he looked older than I thought. Seeing pictures of him in the book he looked like a man in his early 30's. But then in the movie in my opinion he looked like 45. I think seeing Charlie with color and features not just black and white on a page is what made him look older. The director probably had him look older in the movie so he looked more mature.

The third difference I noticed between the book and movie was where Charlie worked. In the book Charlie worked at a mail place. But in the movie Charlie worked at a bread shop. The director probably made Charlie work at the bread shop because there's better ways at the bread shop to show how Joe and Frank made fun of him. For example they filled Charlie's locker with raw bread so then when he opened it it got all over him.

  43. The first difference between the book and the movie in "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes is that Charlie worked at Kaismovs rye bread in the movie but in the book he worked at Donegans box company. I think that the director did this because it could be important to know that joe and frank made in fun of him at the box company but there are better ways to do that at the bread company.

The second difference is that Charlie's land lady's name in the book was Mrs.Flynn but in the movie it was Mrs.Apple. I think the director did this to just change it up a little bit.

The third difference is that in the book Charlies friends as he calls them tell him to go get coffee and a newspaper but in the movie they told him to go to the corner and wait for it to snow. I think the director did this to show that people can be mean in more than one way.
